President's Message: Welcome to New EURASIP Members
I would like to give a warm welcome to our new members and truly hope they will appreciate and support EURASIP activities and initiatives!

I'm just back from Marrakech (Morocco), one of the world's most fascinating destinations, where I attended EUSIPCO 2013. Through their registration, all EUSIPCO 2013 participants automatically become EURASIP members (if not members already) or renewed their membership until December 31st, 2014. Current members who did not attend EUSIPCO 2013 will receive an invitation to renew their membership for 2014 through the EURASIP website. The membership benefits are various and valuable, and they are succinctly described in our promotional flyer downloadable here.

EUSIPCO 2013 was an exceptional event, since it was the first EUSIPCO held outside Europe, with the goal of increasing our visibility in North Africa and to involve in the EURASIP activities our many good colleagues from that close countries, that usually do not attend EUSIPCO in Europe. Thanks to the work of the General co-chairs, Prof. Mounir Ghogho and Prof. Abdelhak Zoubir, and of their organizing committee, EUSIPCO 2013 provided a very attractive technical program, featuring a strong selection of tutorials (with free access for registered participants), special sessions, invited speakers and EURASIP Fellow Inaugural Lectures, as well as a very attractive social program. I believe that all the colleagues who attended this “special” EUSIPCO enjoyed it as much as I did.

Attending EUSIPCO 2013 you supported EURASIP activities and initiatives. Thanks to the work of my predecessors, EURASIP has always tried to offer the best possible service to the signal processing community by adopting a policy of “openness”. In particular, since various years EURASIP provides “open access” to almost all of its material and publications, meaning that these are made freely downloadable not only to EURASIP members, but to every interested reader. In addition, all previous EUSIPCO proceedings are freely available from the EURASIP Open Library. Similarly, workshop and conference organizers who receive EURASIP technical co-sponsorship are asked to make their proceedings freely available in the EURASIP website. Please, visit our website, to find links to our “open access” journals, to our conference proceedings archive, as well as to a selection of downloadable books, and to our Newsletters archive. We also maintain a PhD Library, where PhD theses in signal processing and its applications can be uploaded by authors and downloaded by interested readers. Real-time download statistics are also available. Additionally, since many years, we support ten journals, seven of which are published by SpringerOpen under the “open access” publication model (the other three are “toll access” journals published by Elsevier). Here, I invite everyone again to visit the EURASIP website, follow the links to our open access journals and download the papers of your interest. Do not forget that EURASIP membership also guarantees you a 10% discount for any of the journals supported by EURASIP, either open access (publication fee discount) or toll access (subscription fee discount).

EURASIP has introduced many changes over the past years. I am now pleased to announce the launch of the Seasonal Schools in Signal Processing Program of EURASIP. The EURASIP seasonal school program has the goal of providing graduate students, Ph.D. students, and early stage researchers with background on selected topics in signal processing and its applications. The primary objective for creating a seasonal school program is membership development for young researchers with interests in signal processing and its applications. The Call for 2014 Seasonal School proposals is already open. If you are interested on organizing one EURASIP Seasonal School, you should submit your proposal white paper, following the guidelines reported in the Seasonal Schools webpage.

In closing, let me remind that next EUSIPCO will be held in the beautiful city of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. EUSIPCO 2014 is organized under the General Chairmanship of Prof. Leonel Sousa (INESC-ID / Instituto Superior Técnico) and it promises to be a memorable event. The Call for Papers and more detailed information are available at www.eusipco2014.org.

Looking forward to seeing all of you at EUSIPCO 2014 and having the chance to discuss with you all the challenging issues concerning EURASIP, our friendly and dynamic society.

Call for Nominations: EURASIP Best Paper Awards

EURASIP Best Paper Awards are presented annually to mark outstanding contributions published in the Journals sponsored by EURASIP.

For 2014 awards, papers are eligible that have a publication date in the years 2009 to 2012 inclusive, published in the journals:

  • Signal Processing
  • Image Communication
  • Journal on Advances in Signal Processing
  • Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking

A committee chaired by the Editor-in-Chief for each eligible journal carries out the assessment of the papers. The assessment criteria include:

  • Relevance of the topic
  • Quality of the technical content
  • Style of the presentation
  • Originality

For additional information on the scope and criteria for EURASIP awards, please visit the EURASIP website. The website also gives further details of the nomination and awards process.

Call for Nominations: EURASIP Best PhD Thesis Award

EURASIP created and maintains a database of PhD manuscripts in its PhD Library, which is one of the world's largest in the area of signal processing. The database also keeps tracks of monthly downloads and publishes regularly in its page the 10 top downloaded theses.

Every year a committee of experts nominated by the EURASIP Board of Directors selects up to three theses related to different areas of signal processing to be awarded “Best PhD Thesis” awards. The selection process is based on the evaluation of the impact of the theses, their subsequent journal and conference publications and related citations received, and on the review reports of independent reviewers as well as on the download and citation statistics.

In order to select the 2014 best PhD theses, the temporal window of the years 2009 through 2011 is considered. The awards will be presented during the Awards Ceremony at EUSIPCO 2014. Each award consists of a certificate and of a travelling & accommodation reimbursement of 1K Euros for attending the Awards Ceremony.

If you want to make your PhD thesis available in the EURASIP database, visit the PhD Library and upload your thesis.
