President's Message
This is the first EURASIP Newsletter of 2015. In the last issue of 2014, I welcomed all EUSIPCO-2014 participants and attendees of our 2014 EURASIP Seasonal Schools as 2015 members of the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP). In the past, we were collecting new membership almost only through EUSIPCO attendance. Today, you can also become a member by attending one of the EURASIP Seasonal Schools. We launched a program of Seasonal Schools in Signal Processing last year with the goal of providing graduate students, Ph.D. students, and early stage researchers with a background in signal processing and its applications. We hope in this way to bring our association's activities and initiatives to a bigger audience and so to increase our visibility, especially amongst young researchers and Ph.D. students. In 2014, we had two successful Schools, one in Pisa (Italy) on “Radar Signal Processing”, and one in Aalborg (Denmark), on “Advanced Psychoacoustics: Theory, Practice and Modelling". The next one will be held at CTTC in Barcelona (Spain) in June 2015 and it is devoted to “Foundations and Advances in Stochastic Filtering” (contact the organizer, Dr. Pau Closas, for more information). If you are interested in organizing a EURASIP Seasonal School, please submit your proposal white paper, following the guidelines reported in the Seasonal Schools webpage (www.eurasip.org).

This year, we are starting a new two-year term of the elected EURASIP Board of Directors (BoD). After two years of presidency, I have been re-elected EURASIP President. I thanks the BoD members for giving me the opportunity to continue my work as President, counting on the help of the Past-President, Marc Moonen, and of the new EURASIP Board of Directors. Following the voting for the renewal of the BoD (announced in the Sept—Oct. 2014 issue of the Newsletter), we decided for a rotation on the charges, together with the creation of the new position of External Relations chair. I would like to express here my heartfelt thanks to the BoD members currently retiring from the Board, Maria Paula Queluz and Aggelos Pikrakis. They will continue to support and advise the Association as newly elected “Working Members”. In the new Board of Directors, the newly elected members, Fernando Pereira (Portugal) and Alle-Jan van der Veen (The Netherlands), will be in charge of the External Relations and Publications, respectively. Ana Perez-Neira will be our new Awards chair, Jean-Luc Dugelay the Membership Development chair, Patrick Naylor the Workshops/Conferences chair, and Abdelhak Zoubir our Secretary/Treasurer. In addition to that, Aggelos generously accepted the role of EURASIP officer with the task of Web Services Coordinator.

In concluding, let me remind to put an eye on the deadlines for the next EUSIPCO that will be held in Nice (France), the capital of the Côte d'Azur. EUSIPCO 2015 is organized under the General Chairmanship of Prof. Jean-Luc Dugelay and Prof. Dirk Slock (EURECOM) and it promises to be a memorable event. The Call for Papers and more detailed information are available at www.eusipco2015.org.

Looking forward to seeing all of you at EUSIPCO 2015!

EURASIP Special Area Teams (SATs)
Dear EURASIP Members,

I am writing you to announce the launching of the EURASIP Special Area Teams (SATs) which gather groups of experts interested in a specific field and have the main objective to facilitate the interaction and communication of EURASIP associates in a specific scientific area, notably by sharing knowledge and visions, discuss trends, spreading information about innovations, create ties, facilitating collaboration beyond EURASIP, organize meetings and events, etc. The SATs should allow creating tighter ties between EURASIP members working in a specific area. It is expected that these objectives may allow EURASIP associates to feel that SATs bring added value and thus make EURASIP associates willing to propose SATs and be SAT members.

SATs are established by the EURASIP Board of Directors following a proposal by at least ten EURASIP associates. The proposal should define the special area to address, detail the motivation why it is of benefit to establish a SAT in that specific scientific area, present a specific plan of activities and propose a (partial or complete) list of SAT founding members as well as the Chair and Vice-Chair. SAT proposals may be made at any time to the EURASIP President.

The full definition framework for the SATs is available at the EURASIP Web page, notably at http://www.eurasip.org/Proceedings/SAT.pdf

At this stage, all EURASIP members who feel that SATs may help them to connect better with their colleagues and reach the objectives listed above are welcome to submit their SAT proposals to the the EURASIP External Relations chair, Prof. Fernando Pereira (fernando.pereira@lx.it.pt).

I hope that you may find this new EURASIP instrument useful and I look forward receiving your SAT proposals.

Call for new Local Liaisons
EURASIP is now on the point of renewing the Local Liaison (LL) Board and this message is to invite you to apply to become a LL officer. Among other benefits, EURASIP offers a scientific forum that any member can use to promote different kind of initiatives and LL’s are those who volunteer to propose which kind of initiatives are interesting to be organized. At www.eurasip.org you can find, for instance, the seminar series by outstanding speakers that has been organized by the actual LL’s. In general, a seminar day could be to have one main invited speaker, providing one or two lectures, together with a number of (shorter) lectures provided by local speakers. This has proved to be a successful format, but is merely given as an example here. EURASIP will provide funding for such activities, so that the organizers do not incur large financial risk.

Aside from seminars given by outstanding speakers, among the activities that EURASIP can technically and economically support you can think of:

- Winter or Summer schools;
- PhD Forums or workshops organized by/for PhD students, which promote the transversal competences that are requested in the European Space for Higher Education;
- 3 Minutes Thesis competitions;
- Etc.

EURASIP mainly envisages ’ambitious’ activities, for a fairly large audience (minimum 50) with a formal registration and registration fees. The actual format of these activities is intentionally left largely undefined.

Liaisons are appointed by EURASIP Board of Directors (BoD) and are chosen to best meet the profile of active people within the Signal Processing community. They are in charge not only of coordinating and stimulating local activities, but also of contributing to promote EURASIP at the national level, increasing the response to problems and inviting young collaborators and colleagues to submit their PhD theses. At every EUSIPCO there is a Local Liaison meeting, where we all put in common our ideas.

To apply for LL officer you can contact me or any other BoD member, young collaborators are very welcome. For more information about the Local Liaison Program, how to enrol and to find out who your liaison is in your country, we encourage you to contact me or to visit www.eurasip.org. There you can also find different "Forms of Interest" that clarify the existing procedures.

Also, any comments that you might have about "What do you expect from EURASIP?" are very welcome and can initiate some nice discussions.

EURASIP Seasonal School Foundations and Advances in Stochastic Filtering
The third EURASIP Seasonal School will be held 22—26 June 2015 in Barcelona (Spain) and will focus on “Foundations and Advances in Stochastic Filtering” (FASF2015). It will cover the theoretical foundations and tackle both methodological advances and state-of-the-art applications of stochastic filtering. The programme is arranged around five one-day tutorials delivered by internationally renowned researchers. The School aims at providing Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers and young scientists the opportunity to meet some of the leading experts in the field and to learn from them.

More information can be found in the flyer of the PhD school.
