Newsletter – Vol. 36, January 2025

Welcome to the first EURASIP newsletter of 2025. It is my honour to write this message as the new President of EURASIP. First I wish to thank my predecessor Prof Jean-Yves Tourneret who has led EURASIP with distinction, energy and elan over the last three years. Jean-Yves oversaw the return of our flagship conference EUSIPCO to an in-person event, the creation of the Student Committee and also of the EURASIP Academy. The primary objective of the Academy is to help develop the careers of the young talented signal processing researchers working for our association through the development of their skills. I look forward to Jean-Yves supporting me with his wise counsel as Past President of EURASIP.

I would like to take a moment to highlight the roles of Board of Directors (BoD) members: Esa Ollia as Director for Publications, Maria Sabrina Greco as Director for Finance and Operations, Nelly Pustelnik as Director for Technical Programs and Membership, Geert Leus as Director for Technical Activities, Xavier Mestre as Director for Conferences, Eva Lagunas as Director for Awards. I know that my colleagues on the Board of Directors will be as committed as I am to ensuring EURASIP supports its members during my term as President. Björn Ottersen's leadership of the Academy, with assistance from Martine Defoort and the support of Toon van Waterschoot in the conference organization, is critical to our future success.

We are also grateful for the support in all the IT and website related issues to Antoon Frehe and Evelyne Vanraes, who work silently behind the scenes and are always there to provide assistance when needed. We also thank Stefano Damiano for his contributions to the EURASIP newsletter. Of course I wish to acknowledge the power behind the throne, Aldona Niemiro-Sznajder, for her many efficient, effective and ongoing contributions to EURASIP.

The mission of EURASIP remains “to improve communication between groups and individuals that work within the multidisciplinary, fast-growing field of Signal Processing in Europe and elsewhere, and to exchange and disseminate information in the field all over the world.”

EURASIP is underpinned by five pillars.
Members: EURASIP exists to serve its members, and as the Board of Directors, we will continue to focus on developing ways in which EURASIP can support its members through our technical activities, including workshops, conferences, webinars, publications, seasonal schools, awards, and our newly created Academy.

Publications: Working with our publishers and editorial boards, we will continue to examine the on-going dilemmas of quality vs. quantity, open vs. toll access publishing in this period of fast-moving evolution in scientific publishing. We are very grateful for the successful work of the editorial boards of the journals and in particular the Editors-in-Chief (EiC). At this time, let me thank all the EiCs of the EURASIP journals:

  • Maria Sabrina Greco, EiC of the Journal on Advances in Signal Processing
  • Cédric Richard, EiC of Signal Processing
  • Mads Græsbøll Christensen, EiC of the Journal on Audio, Speech, and Music Processing
  • Eduard Jorswieck, EiC of the Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking
  • Giuseppe Valenzise, EiC of the Journal on Image and Video Processing
  • Zekeriya Erkin, EiC of the Journal on Information Security
  • Federica Battisti, EiC of Signal Processing: Image Communication
  • Frédéric Bimbot, EiC of Speech Communication

EUSIPCO is our flagship conference and, alongside our publications, is our main route for dissemination of scientific research. It takes place every year between the end of August and the start of September and attracts around 700-800 delegates. We will continue to work to keep this a vital, engaging, nourishing, fruitful and enjoyable event of high quality and, for this, we thank the many past and future organizers of EUSIPCO, whose voluntary efforts are so crucial to the success of EUSIPCO and EURASIP.

It is timely to mention EUSIPCO 2025 to be held in Sicily, and just to remind you that the paper submission deadline is March 1st 2025. I am sure that it will be a great EUSIPCO organized by an excellent and dedicated team. We anticipate a multi-disciplinary technical programme comprising keynotes, oral and poster sessions, tutorials and satellite workshops. It will provide an ideal forum for scientific discussion and dissemination of new findings and results. This will be the 33rd edition of EUSIPCO and I look forward to meeting you there.

EURASIP Awards program: This pillar pays tribute to those members of our community who have made outstanding technical contributions, or those institutions that enabled the development of remarkable research and dissemination, resulting in the advancement of the signal processing domain. The EURASIP Awards program includes Best Paper Awards, Society Awards, EURASIP Fellowships and Best PhD Awards. EURASIP has also developed a 3 Minutes Thesis contest during the EUSIPCO conference that celebrates our future as a community.

The final pillar is centered on technical activities that are structured into Technical Area Committees (TACs). I would like to thank the chairs of all the TACs for their efforts in supporting EURASIP activities in signal and image processing.

My aim as President over the next three years is to help grow, develop and strengthen the role of EURASIP in supporting the European signal processing community.

I wish you all a successful 2025 full of new signal and image processing experiences.

To PhD students: If you are devoting or have devoted 3 or more years to your PhD, you could devote 3 minutes to explain it to a more general public, we challenge you!
After the successful past editions, the Organizing Committee of EUSIPCO 2025 is pleased to offer a 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) contest for the eleventh consecutive year, where PhD students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. This activity is sponsored by EURASIP. It is an exercise for students to consolidate their ideas so they can present them concisely to an audience specialized in different areas. With scientific and technical quality, EURASIP wants to promote transversal skills of PhD researchers, such as oral and presentation skills, and it also wants to help PhDs gain visibility of their work.

Important dates:

  • 3MT video and one-page abstract submission: 4 July 2025
  • 3MT shortlist announced: 10 August 2025

For more information, please visit the website of the contest.
